Urban Hydrology

The Smith lab focuses on water quantity issues in urban areas with a particular focus on urban flooding. We seek to identify urban floods through the use of traditional and non-traditional data and through the use of urban flood sensors. We also study the drivers of flooding, including heavy rainfall, land use, physiography, and local practices. We hope to positively influence planning for – and prevention of – urban flooding, particularly through the study of green infrastructure solutions. Our methods involve sensing in the lab and in the field, data analysis, and hydrologic modeling.
