I am Meaghan Boehm (she/her) and I am a rising junior at Williams College. I am double majoring in Biology and Political Science with a concentration in Environmental Studies. I am working with Professor Cheng, where I’ll be studying and analyzing urban soils as part of a collaborative project with the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation. Prior to working with the BUEE program, I was a Zilkha Center Intern at the Williams Environmental Center, where I contributed to solar PV implementation projects for the campus. I’ve also worked with Acterra, a non-profit organization promoting local sustainability and equity solutions to environmental problems in the Bay Area, where I conducted policy research and analysis regarding composting and sustainable agriculture for the area. I am passionate about environmental preservation, conservation, and ecology. Aside from these larger goals, I enjoy playing field hockey, hiking, reading, crocheting, and baking.

My name is Abby (she/ her) and I am a first year Environmental Studies major at Virginia Commonwealth University. I enjoy spending my time outdoors and have found that I learn something new every time I go into nature! As part of the BUEE program, I will be studying the new living shoreline at Jamaica Bay with Dr. Branco. I’ve previously been involved in research at VCU studying the feather reflectivity of prothonotary warblers, a small yellow bird that migrates from North to South America every year. This research can help us better understand the impact that climate conditions have on the species. In my free time, I like to read and make art. I hope to pursue a combination of lab and field work in ecology in my future career, so I am very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the BUEE program!

Julia is currently studying at Rutgers University, where she is majoring in Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources with a minor in Marine Sciences. In her future research endeavors, Julia hopes to analyze how anthropogenic stressors affect vertebrates residing within the intertidal zone, both behaviorally and physiologically. Her interest in studying animal behavior and physiology stems from her work as a zookeeper and veterinary technician. As a zookeeper, Julia was responsible for training, feeding, and creating enrichment for animals, including macaws, horses, marmosets, bison, capybaras, and alligators. While working as a veterinary technician, she learned how to administer vaccines and medications to cats and dogs. In her free time, Julia enjoys hiking, dancing, visiting museums, and listening to music.

Hi, I’m Madeline Frank! I’m a rising sophomore at Boston College and I’m currently majoring in environmental geosciences. Growing up in New Hampshire, I learned at a young age to appreciate the world’s natural beauty and I am very passionate about being a good steward of the Earth. I hope to pursue a career in the exploration of different solutions to anthropogenic effects on the climate, specifically in regard to keeping our oceans clean. I love to be outside and spend my free time hiking, skiing, sailing, surfing, and playing tennis. In high school, I was involved in Students for Environmental Awareness and organized monthly beach cleanups for Blue Ocean Society. I plan to become more involved in BC’s Ecopledge club in the following year. This summer, I will be working in the Zarnoch lab to better understand how restoration projects impact urban shoreline ecosystems.

I currently work as an undergraduate researcher in the Forlano Lab investigating the impact of anthropogenic noise on the calling behavior of oyster toadfish and am particularly interested in studying how the behavior of marine organisms is impacted by human-led activities. In my free time, I enjoy making PowerPoint presentations of my niche interests, journaling, and engaging in mild tomfoolery. I’m excited to be part of the BUEE program this summer and study reproductive behavior in northern pipefish with Dr. Wilson.

My name is Antonio Rodriguez, and I am an incoming senior student at SUNY Maritime College in the Bronx, New York. I live in Queens, New York, and previously worked in the West Village of Manhattan in the restaurant industry. I am currently studying for a bachelor’s in marine environmental science, with my minor being Marine Biology. My program focuses on the environmental and chemical reactions that take place within the world’s oceans and atmosphere. My minor has allowed for further specializations into zoological research which I hope to focus on in the future. This summer I will be working with Dr. Zarnoch from Baruch College with a primary focus on urban salt marsh ecology and sustainability. In my free time I enjoy reading, museums, cooking, spending time with family & friends and going out dancing. I am extremely excited to be able to work with like-minded scientists and protégés this summer to better understand our urban environments.
